my review of the young adult novel,
anna dressed in blood
"GOOD GOREY FUN! "
A VERY FOREBODING TITLE, this book does not disappoint.
anna dressed in blood is great for those who want an easy to read and satisfying ghost story.
i work in an awesome small town library during the day, and manage a ghost tour company. as you can imagine, i love a good ghost story.
I really loved this book. it was the catalyst for my realization that i am a fan of the horror novel genre, almost exclusively. of course, i always knew i liked reading scary stories, but this book reminded me that the horror genre is my favorite to read. Now i am on a hunt for more like anna dressed in blood.
for me, anna dressed in blood delivered The perfect Ghost Story with a grown-up Scooby-Doo vibe, and gave me the creeps, chills, and great gory fun i was hoping for.
main character, cas lowood, is a ghost hunter. but not just any normal paranormal enthusiast like you and me. cas has a special ability passed down from his family; a special tool he can use to return the dead back to hell.
follow cas and his team of unlikely friends as he tracks and returns the restless and unruly spirits of guilty murderers and tragic deaths to the depths of the beyond.
cas meets anna, a ghost with a grudge no one can imagine.
little does he know his thirst for the hunt will grow into an adventure of peril unlike any he has had before.
i grew up reading books and watching shows like goosebumps, scooby-doo, scary stories to tell in the dark, and in a dark dark room (only a handful of the millions of the genre i have actually watched and read). for me, anna dressed in blood was a pretty close kin to these titles. though classified as a young adult title for its language and somewhat teenage level mature content, it had the same type of feeling as a great goosebumps novel for me.
i highly recommend this novel to anyone who is a fan of a good ghost story. anna dressed in blood will always be a favorite book of mine.

MY FIRST GHOST
We get asked almost every time we do a tour, "What is the scariest experience you have had on a Ghost Tour"?
Sometimes we have a hard time answering this question. What people don't know, is that we go out there and do these tours every single week. We experience something almost every single time we do a Ghost Tour.
Some of the time, we don't experience much more than chills up our spine, or our hair standing on end. But sometimes, when the air is thin, the winds are calm, and the silence is as empty as the town we are in, we can hear things, see things, and feel things that we cannot explain.
One story I really like to tell, is a personal experience.
When I first started working for the company in 2011, I was a skeptic. I didn't really believe in Ghosts, but I really wanted to. So I would trek on tours alongside the owner, so I could learn the ropes, and while on tour, I hoped to find my own personal experience.
I got what I asked for.
On one of our late night R rated Ghost Tours, we had a huge group of about thirty people. It was really cold that night, and we were all huddled together to keep the wind off our backs. I was looking inside one of the tour spot windows at the antiques and oddities inside the shop. Suddenly, I saw what I can only explain as a man, dressed in a suit and tophat (no, it wasn't Danny the tour guide), poking his head in and out from behind a curtain in the back of the shop. He was solid black, as if completely made of shadow. He stood about 6 feet or more tall, and had no visible features other than his silhouette.
Now, if it had been daytime, I could have passed this off easily. But suddenly, the girl beside me shouted "Oh my God! Do you see him"? I looked at her, and realized she saw the man, too.
All of the sudden, hordes of the crowd started gasping, oohing and awing, and several of them had seen the exact same thing we had.
Danny the tour guide was the only person who did not see it, save one or two of the crowd, because his back was turned to face us instead of the shop.
Several minutes of shock and awe exhaled from the crowd, and some of us were more shaken than we wanted to admit. As everyone experienced this together, it made it easier to cope with our feelings about it, however, we all felt a little shocked and embarrassed. At least I know, I did.
When the excitement wore down, we moved on to our next location. But I know for me, this was one of the most shocking and crazy experiences I have ever had.
I love to debunk. I love to prove that something is just a shadow, or an animal, or a reflection, etc. I have a hard time in believing in things I cannot see.
So how do I know I saw a real ghost?
I found out that in this specific location, there was a manager of the establishment, an immigrant from Germany, who wore a tophat every day with his tailored suit. He was 6 feet tall. One day during a routine store opening, two robbers came in and brutally murdered him, along with the rest of the staff. People who work inside the store currently, report seeing his ghost frequently in the same area that we sighted him when we were on tour.
On this spooky evening, with a cold chill on my skin, I saw what I can not explain. I saw my first real ghost. I've never doubted it ever again!
